The 2 South-Sudanese pastors; Pastor Yat Michael and Peter Reith; were arrested in December and January respectively and detained facing 6 charges each. These charges included "offending Islamic beliefs", promoting hatred...
amongst sects and undermining the constitutional system. Charges which qualified them for being sentenced to the death penalty. However, to the glory of GOD, according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), they have finally been released.
These were Michael's words in response to his release:
"I am feeling free because I was in jail for many months. I have become like I'm born again."International groups such as Amnesty International helped to fight for their release while CSW called the charges "unwarranted and extreme". Furthermore, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom notes that government policies and societal pressures are used in Sudan (97% Islamic nation) to encourage people to convert to Islam.
