The Catholic Archbishop of Jos and president of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, in a seminar repeated the church’s opposition to abortion and use of contraceptives. while declaring open a seminar for Catholic doctors, nurses and other health workers in Jos during the conference Kaigama said
“We don’t need to repeat here that the church, based on biblical tradition, is clearly not in favour of abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, artificial contraception and a host of others,” , .“The Catholic church has been criticised over its stance on issues such as abortion, condom usage, homosexuality, cloning, stem cell research, etc, but we will not compromise,” he said.
The bishop maintained that the church supports the natural method of family planning, adding that it would not be cowed by opposition.
Urging Nigerians to maintain its stance against gay relationships and other “unnatural” practices, irrespective of criticisms from abroad, Archbishop Kaigama said:“We must not be swallowed up by the tyrannical imposition of some governments or international non-governmental organisations who wish to dictate the moral trend of the world based on their secular values.”Now, in the case of abortions, that is clear and understandable, but in the case of no contraceptives? hmm. What do you think?
