Kodai Hirijan, an 'untouchable' in the eyes of the caste system, was prepared to go to any lengths to save his ailing son, Bijaya Hirijan, who he was told was 'occupied by a spirit'.

Mr Hirijan reportedly went to seek the help of local shaman Ganja Harijan (far right), who was believed to have special 'spiritual powers'. They then confronted the spirit inside of his son who then responded saying that it needed 'human meat' before it would leave.
Taking this to be the cure for his son, he then set out and found 10-year old Jivan Kohar who was playing with his friends in the village. Mr Hirijan then lured the young boy away to a temple on the outskirts of the village with a promise to give him biscuits and 50 rupees (155 naira).
When in the temple, as part of a 'special religious ritual' presided over by the shaman Harijan, a group of men held the young boy down while one of them slit his throat. His body was then dumped on the outskirts of the village and was found 3 days later, with the head almost completely detached from the body.
Mr Kodai Hirijan then fled to India while his wife reported his actions to the police. He was later caught and testified to partaking in the murder of the young boy while 9 people, including Hirijan's sick son, three of his brothers, his neighbour and the shaman Harijan himself, have allegedly been arrested.
The chief district officer of the Nawalparasi district, where this all took place, said this to CNN:
