Fire fighters from the Lagos State fire service hurried to the scene where they began to struggle to put out the flames; a feat that they did not accomplish until about 6:30pm.

Members of the St. Anthony Catholic church, some of whom were engaged in rehearsals, rushed to safety as the church was being evacuated. Moreover, in spite of the efforts of the neighbours to empty the church and carry all the valuables away such as the pulpit, chairs, and public address system, in the end the damages cost the church millions of Naira.

A resident of the area named Hamed gave this statement:
"We just discovered smoke was coming out of some of the planks and before we knew it, 'Thinner' which is a chemical we use to make paint very thick exploded and the whole area went up in flames."
